Decks and PDFs that come out true to their template, on a document platform Idealite designed and delivered end to end.
{ Project Overview }
About the Project
Optum and UnitedHealthcare (UHC) are part of UnitedHealth Group: Optum delivers care aided by technology and data, and UHC offers health benefits. Presentations assembled by hand take time to build, and their layouts can drift from one version to the next. This engagement centered on a platform that generates them from templates instead. It holds multiple templates and produces PowerPoint decks and PDF documents from them, so each file follows the layout of the template it came from. Getting a document into the right shape becomes a matter of starting from the right template, and the same platform delivers both editable decks and fixed PDFs. Idealite designed the platform's architecture and handled all of its backend and frontend requirements, with document generation running on a Node.js backend.

{ The Challenge }
Keeping Every Document On-Format
Key Challenges
- Building decks slide by slide is slow
- Layouts drift between versions
- Off-template documents look inconsistent
- Each document type needs its own layout
- Some need editing, others a fixed copy
{ Our Solution }
Templates In, Finished Documents Out
- Template-based document generation
- Multiple ready templates
- Editable PowerPoint decks
- Ready-to-share PDFs
- Consistent document layouts
{ How We Built It }
Development Process
How the Optum + UHC engagement came together, step by step.
- 01
Mapping the Documents
Started from the decks and PDFs the platform had to produce and the layouts each one needed to follow.
- 02
Designing Around Templates
Designed the platform so every document starts from one of its templates and keeps that template's structure.
- 03
One Platform, Both Formats
Built one platform, front to back, that delivers both editable PowerPoint decks and fixed PDFs.
- 04
Launching the Platform
Delivered the platform ready to generate documents from its templates, with a dependable route for shipping future updates.

{ Results & Impact }
Delivering Business Value
Consistent Documents
Every deck and PDF follows its template's layout, version after version.
No Slide Rebuilding
Documents start from a ready template instead of being built slide by slide.
PowerPoint and PDF
One platform delivers editable PowerPoint decks and ready-to-share PDFs.
One Document Platform
Different kinds of documents come from one place and one template library.

Objectives
- Consistent Documents: Produce PowerPoint decks and PDFs that follow set templates, so every document keeps the same layout.
- Right Format, Every Time: Offer documents as editable PowerPoint decks or fixed PDFs, to suit how each one will be used.
- One Platform, Many Documents: Produce different kinds of documents from a single platform that holds multiple templates.
Requirements
- Generate PowerPoint (PPT) presentations and PDF documents from templates.
- Support multiple templates within one platform.
- Cover all of the platform's backend and frontend requirements.
- Build and release platform changes through GitHub pipelines (CI/CD).
Architecture
- Template-driven generation: each PowerPoint or PDF output is generated from one of the platform's templates.
- Node.js backend that runs the document generation.
- Frontend connected to the Node.js backend, covering the platform's frontend requirements.
- CI/CD pipelines on GitHub (GitHub Actions), designed by Idealite.
Technology stack
- Node.js: backend that runs template-based PowerPoint and PDF generation.
- GitHub Actions: CI/CD pipelines for the platform.
Front end
- Platform frontend covering all of the platform's frontend requirements, delivered by Idealite.
Back end
- Node.js backend: Idealite handled all of the backend requirements.
- Template-based generation of PowerPoint (PPT) and PDF files across multiple templates.
Deployment
- CI/CD pipelines on GitHub (GitHub Actions), designed by Idealite, for building and releasing platform changes.
Challenges & solutions
- Multiple templates: the platform generates documents from several templates, so the generation logic has to work across all of them rather than for a single fixed layout.
- Two output formats: the platform produces both editable PowerPoint (PPT) files and fixed-layout PDFs from its templates, so generation has to handle both.
- Layout fidelity: each generated PowerPoint deck or PDF has to match the layout of the template it came from.
Outcomes
- Decks and PDFs follow the layout of the template they are generated from, so documents stay consistent from one version to the next.
- Different kinds of documents are produced from one platform that holds multiple templates.
- Documents are available as editable PowerPoint decks or ready-to-share PDFs.
